What is tafsir, and how did al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir read the Quran?

Al-Tabari reportedly offered his students a 30,000-page commentary on the Quran; they said no lifetime would be long enough, so he cut it to 3,000, and his work was thought lost in the West until the 19th century.
