Why is the best moment to win the ball back right after you lose it?

The coach credited with gegenpressing was nicknamed 'the professor' as a jeer, before the name became a sign of respect.

▶ Start the story

After losing the ball, a team can drop back and get organised. Gegenpressing, or counter-pressing, says the opposite: the team, after losing possession, immediately attempts to win it back rather than falling back to regroup. The German coach Ralf Rangnick is credited with developing it.

Jürgen Klopp, its most famous champion, explained why it works. The best moment to win the ball is immediately after your team just lost it. The opponent is still looking for orientation, he has taken his eyes off the game to make his tackle or interception, and he has expended energy. Both make him vulnerable. Klopp said a well-executed counter-pressing system can be more effective than any playmaker at creating chances.

What happens in the seconds after you lose the ball
  1. Step 1: You lose the ball

Gegenpressing: don't fall back to regroup

  2. Step 2: The opponent is vulnerable

He is still looking for orientation, has taken his eyes off the game and has spent energy

  3. Step 3: Press at once

Win the ball back as far up the pitch as possible

  4. Step 4: Attack while they are disorganised

Lobanovskyi: the first seconds after winning the ball are when the opposition is least organised

Where did the idea come from? Rangnick developed it after playing a friendly against Dynamo Kyiv in 1984, inspired by the pressing philosophy of the Soviet coach Valeriy Lobanovskyi. Dynamo's pressing aimed to create numerical superiority where the ball was and to deny opponents both space and time for the right decisions. Lobanovskyi stressed the first seconds after winning the ball, when the opposition is least ready to defend in an organised manner. Rangnick later became known as "the professor", a nickname first used to jeer him and later to show respect.

It is expensive. The tactic requires great amounts of speed, organisation and stamina, and the team must be compact. It can spread a defensive formation more thinly, and even Klopp's Liverpool was criticised at times for its inability to control games.

Recap

Press immediately after losing the ball: the opponent is disoriented and tired, so he is easiest to rob right then.

💡 A trick to remember it · Lose it, chase it: the thief is still catching his breath.

Surprising fact · Rangnick's nickname 'professor' began as a jeer, and he developed gegenpressing after a friendly against Dynamo Kyiv.
