Why do some volcanoes explode and others just ooze lava?

Hawaiian lava can flow calmly enough that you could, very carefully, walk near it, while volcanoes like Mount St Helens blast ash and rock high into the sky, and the difference is mostly a matter of how much silica and gas the magma happens to be carrying.
